DUNGEONS & DUMBFOUNDED - Mechanics

The Live D&D Trivia Game Show Where Knowledge Is Power… and a Natural 1 Is Embarrassing.

I think this could make an excellent recurring YouTube livestream for The Mystic Syndicate, combining D&D knowledge, tabletop history, friendly competition, audience participation, and special guests from the gaming industry.

The concept is a cross between Jeopardy!, a sports trivia panel show, and a tabletop gaming session, with contestants writing answers on whiteboards and revealing them simultaneously.

1. Show name ideas

Here are some possible titles that could become recognizable brands.

Show title

Tagline

Roll for Knowledge

Intelligence Checks Required.

Dungeons & Dumbfounded

Where Even the Experts Roll a 1.

Critical Thinking

Roll High. Think Fast.

The Knowledge Check

How Well Do You Really Know D&D?

2. The show format

Live YouTube

Weekly or biweekly

45–60 minutes

The host reads a question, everyone has 15–30 seconds to write an answer, and on the command "SHOW YOUR SCROLLS!", all contestants reveal their whiteboards.

Correct answers earn points. Wrong answers invite ridicule from the host, other contestants, and the live audience.

This eliminates the advantage of whoever hits a buzzer first and allows every contestant to participate in every question.

3. Categories and example questions

Beholder » DnD 2024 Monsters

Monster Manual Mayhem

Read a creature's description without revealing its name. Contestants identify the monster.

Example: "This floating aberration possesses a large central eye and numerous smaller eyes, each capable of unleashing magical effects."

Answer: Beholder.

Sheet Weaver - Universal Character Sheet Builder

Rules Lawyers

Questions about actual D&D mechanics, including disputed rules and common misconceptions.

Example: "In D&D 5e (2014), does rolling a natural 20 automatically succeed on an ability check?"

Answer: No, not under the standard rules.

Book Recommendations for Dungeon Masters – Dirt Cheap Dungeons

Ancient Lore

D&D history, TSR, famous creators, legendary modules, and edition changes.

Example: "What year was the original Dungeons & Dragons game first published?"

Answer: 1974.

Objets magiques D&D 5e — armes, armures, potions originales

Identify That Magic Item

Describe a famous item without naming it.

Example: "This magical item is infamous for its potentially disastrous effects when drawing cards at random."

Answer: Deck of Many Things.

How-To: Your Beginner's Guide to DMing

What Would the DM Do?

Present a rules scenario and ask contestants to determine the correct ruling.

Example: "A player casts fireball in a room containing three enemies. How many damage rolls are normally made?"

Answer: One damage roll, applied to all affected creatures.

Additional rotating categories could include Name That Spell, Forgotten Realms Geography, Guess the Adventure Module, Class Warfare, Alignment Arguments, and Who Said That?

4. Special guest appearances — "Legends of the Lore"

This could be the show's signature feature.

Imagine reaching out to established RPG designers, writers, historians, and personalities, including someone like Rob Kuntz, and having them appear live or provide prerecorded trivia questions.

Legendary Guest Question

SPECIAL ROUND • 500 POINTS

“I was there when some of the earliest adventures were being played. Here's your question: What was the name of the famous dungeon beneath Castle Greyhawk?”

Contestants write their answers, and the guest reveals the correct response, followed by a personal anecdote.

Potential guests might include Rob Kuntz, Tim Kask, Frank Mentzer, and other living RPG creators, subject to availability.

The real value isn't just having famous guests ask trivia questions. It's the opportunity for them to tell stories that viewers may never have heard.

5. Suggested rounds

Contestants wager points on one final question

Variable

A fun twist: Once per episode, each contestant can declare "I Have Advantage!" before a question. A correct answer earns double points, but an incorrect answer loses the question's normal point value.

6. Live audience participation

The YouTube audience shouldn't just watch. They should play along.

Viewers could submit their answers in chat before the contestants reveal their boards. A moderator could track audience performance, select questions for future episodes, and run a live prediction about who will win.

You could also have a "Chat Casts Vicious Mockery" segment where the audience votes for the funniest incorrect answer of the evening.

Eventually, audience members could earn an opportunity to compete in a special viewer championship.

7. Championship and recurring content

The show could become a seasonal competition, rather than just isolated trivia episodes.

The Road to the Crown

  1. Qualifying episodes: Four contestants compete each week.

  2. Monthly championship: Episode winners return to compete.

  3. Season finale: The best contestants battle for the title of Grand Loremaster.

  4. Special editions: Dungeon Masters vs. Players, Old School vs. New School, and Celebrity RPG Trivia.

This also creates opportunities for Patreon subscriber participation, exclusive qualifying games, guest-hosted episodes, and a recurring championship trophy.

8. Visual identity, Awards and Merch

9. Opening monologue

"Welcome, adventurers, scholars, dungeon masters, and rules lawyers, to ROLL FOR KNOWLEDGE!

The only game show where knowing the difference between a beholder and a spectator could mean the difference between glory and humiliation!

Tonight, four brave contestants enter our dungeon armed with nothing but their memories, a whiteboard, and a questionable understanding of fifth-edition rules.

There will be monsters! There will be magic! There will be arguments about rules written fifty years ago!

And remember, adventurers: Intelligence may be your dump stat, but tonight, it's the only stat that matters!

ROLL FOR KNOWLEDGE!"
