Harlot Generator

Who You Meet in the Free City After Dark

Every city has its street-level encounters, and Greyhawk is no exception. Wander the wrong alley in the Garden Quarter after dusk, or linger too long near the Foreign Quarter's caravanserai gates, and you're bound to run into one of the city's many working women — and men — of the night.

The trouble is, not every "harlot encounter" is what it first appears. The party might stumble across a slovenly trull just trying to make her coin for the night, or they might unknowingly cross paths with a wealthy procuress who runs half the houses in the Old City. The encounter could be with a dancer prostituting herself on her own terms, an aged madam who's seen three generations of the quarter come and go, or even a pimp sizing up a mark. On top of that, there's always a chance she knows something worth paying for, a chance she's spinning a tale to earn a reward she hasn't earned, and a chance she's a thief herself — or keeping company with one.

Here's the classic sub-table for sorting out exactly who the party has run into:

A quick note on appearances: an expensive doxy carries herself like a gentlewoman, and a haughty courtesan could pass for a noblewoman outright. The rest of the table might just as easily be mistaken for an ordinary goodwife going about her business — which is exactly what makes them so easy to underestimate.

And then there are the odds every referee should keep in the back of their mind for any roll on this table:

  • 30% chance she knows something genuinely valuable

  • 15% chance she's inventing a story to squeeze out a reward

  • 20% chance she is, or works with, a thief

Rolling all of that by hand — the type, the appearance, a full stat block, where in the city she's found, and whether tonight's encounter comes with a lead, a lie, or a light-fingered complication — is a lot to juggle mid-session.

So I built something to do it for you.

Welcome to the Automated Generator

I put together a full web-based Harlot Encounter Generator for Greyhawk that handles the entire process in one click: it rolls the d100 result and appearance impression straight from the table above, generates a name, race, age, and alignment, rolls a classic 3d6-in-order stat block, places her in a specific Free City district and venue, gives her a distinguishing quirk, and then rolls the info/lie/thief odds independently — so any given encounter can carry none, one, or all three of those complications at once.

It's built for the table: no installs, no login, just a button that says Roll an encounter, and a printable sheet for when you want a paper copy in front of you instead of a screen.

Roll a few and see who turns up in the Free City tonight.
