The Forge and the Hag

Scene: The Blacksmith's Forge

Setting: The forge is filled with the sound of hammering and the scent of molten metal. Weapons and armor line the walls, and the forge's fire casts a warm glow across the room. Borin Stonefist is working alongside his father, Kaleb Stonefist, shaping a piece of metal into a sword. A Ranger, covered in travel dust and wearing rugged attire, stands at the counter, examining a finely crafted sword.

Ranger: (examining the sword, raising an eyebrow) "This is a fine piece of work, but the price you’re asking is a bit steep, don’t you think?"

Kaleb Stonefist: (wiping his hands on a cloth, smiling) "Quality work commands a fair price. That sword will serve you well, whether in defense or in battle."

Ranger: (leaning in, lowering his voice) "Have you heard the latest news from the northern swamps? The Troll Fens?"

Kaleb: (curious) "I haven’t. What’s happening up there?"

Ranger: "An old hag has been seen near the Troll Fens, casting curses on anyone who ventures too close. They say she's over a hundred years old and possesses knowledge of powerful, forbidden spells."

Borin: (pretending to focus on his work, listening intently)

Kaleb: (frowning) "That’s troubling news. The Troll Fens are dangerous enough without a witch cursing folks."

Ranger: (nodding) "Exactly. Times are uncertain, and dangers are growing. Folks like me, we take risks every day. Now, with this hag about, the valley's becoming even more treacherous."

Kaleb: (thoughtful) "Aye, it’s true. But that’s all the more reason to arm yourself well. A good sword can make the difference between life and death out there."

Ranger: (sighing) "I understand, but with all these dangers, coin is getting harder to come by. Can’t you give a fellow a break? Maybe shave a few gold pieces off the price? Consider it a service to those of us keeping the valley safe."

Borin: (deciding to interject) "Father, the Ranger has a point. With all the threats he faces, it wouldn't hurt to show a bit of goodwill. It’s not just about the gold."

Kaleb: (glancing at Borin, then back at the Ranger) "You drive a hard bargain, son. Very well. For the sake of the valley’s safety and the risks you Rangers take, I’ll lower the price. But just this once."

Ranger: (smiling, extending his hand) "You have my thanks. You won’t regret it. This sword will see plenty of use defending these lands."

Kaleb: (shaking the Ranger’s hand) "See that it does. And spread the word about our forge. Quality work at a fair price."

Ranger: "I’ll do that. And if I hear more about this hag, I’ll make sure to let you know. Stay safe, both of you."

Borin: "Thank you, Ranger. Stay safe out there."

The Ranger leaves, the new sword in hand, and Borin and his father return to their work, the forge filled with the sounds of hammering and the crackling fire. Kaleb looks at Borin with a mixture of pride and amusement.

Kaleb: "You handled that well, Borin. You’ve got a good head on your shoulders."

Borin: (smiling) "Just trying to help, Father. Every bit counts."
