Wand of Osseous Magic

Wand of Osseous Magic (also known as the Zahrn Zapper)

Description: The Necromancer's Tooth Wand is a tapered iron rod designed to hold a single tooth from various creatures in a socket at the end of the rod, acting as a focus for the wand's magic. The type of tooth affixed to the wand determines the spell and number of charges it grants. When the charges of an affixed tooth are depleted, the tooth crumbles to dust, and a new tooth must be affixed to continue using the wand.

Item Type: Wondrous Item (Rod)

Aura: Moderate Necromancy

Caster Level: 9th

Weight: 2 lbs

Market Price: 10,000 gp

Construction Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, Magic Missile, suitable teeth from various creatures, 5,000 gp, 400 XP.

Properties:

  1. Attaching Teeth: Attaching a tooth to the wand requires a full-round action. The type of tooth determines the spell and number of charges. The tooth must come from a creature that has died within the last 24 hours.

  2. Teeth and Corresponding Spells:

    • Goblin Tooth: Grants three charges of Cause Fear (CL 1).

    • Human Tooth: Grants three charges of Magic Missile (CL 3). Each charge allows the wielder to cast Magic Missile as if cast by a 3rd-level caster.

    • Orc Tooth: Grants two charges of Ray of Enfeeblement (CL 5).

    • Giant's Molar: Grants two charges of Hold Person (CL 9).

    • Vampire Fang: Grants two charges of Vampiric Touch (CL 7).

    • Dragon Tooth: Grants one charge of Fireball (CL 10).

  3. Usage: The wielder can use the wand as long as there are charges left in the affixed tooth. When all charges are expended, the tooth crumbles, and a new tooth must be affixed to continue using the wand.

  4. Recharge: The wand itself does not recharge. It requires new teeth to be effective.

Special:

  • The wand's magic is inherently necromantic and draws power from the life force of the creature the tooth was taken from.

  • The wielder must make a successful DC 15 Knowledge (arcana) check to affix a tooth correctly. Failing this check wastes the tooth.

Appearance: The wand is a black, tapered iron rod, about 18 inches long, with small, intricate runes etched along its length. It has a single spike at the end where the teeth can be affixed. The rod emits a faint, eerie glow when a tooth is affixed to it.
