Pizza in the World of Greyhawk
A Culinary Chronicle of the Flanaess
In the World of Greyhawk—where sword clashes, spellbooks crackle, and kingdoms rise and fall—one thing brings people of all races and alignments together: pizza. From humble flatbreads in the Kron Hills to bubbling deep-dish pies served in the Free City of Greyhawk, this beloved dish has taken on mythic proportions.
Recently a new kind of pizza has emerged—one with origins as mysterious as Vecna’s whispers and as satisfying as a Heroes' Feast. Let's explore the classic styles and the magically-infused marvel that's taking Greyhawk by storm.
Origins of Pizza in the Flanaess
The concept of pizza likely originated from Oeridian flatbreads—simple wheat crusts topped with crushed tomatoes and cheese made from sheep or goat milk. Initially baked on hot stones or in crude ovens, the dish evolved quickly as trade and conquest spread ingredients and cooking techniques across the Flanaess.
Regional Styles of Pizza
Pizza varies widely from city to city and reflects local cultures, flavors, and traditions:
Dyvers – Known for rectangular, thick-crust pies with caramelized cheese edges. Locals swear the water of the Velverdyva River gives the dough its chewy perfection.
Veluna – Thin and elegant, topped with basil, cream cheese, and charred figs. Popular during evening religious meditations. It's pizza that doubles as incense.
Furyondy and the Shield Lands – "Oeridian Flat Pies": open-faced bread with simple ingredients, cooked in stone ovens. Rustic, efficient, and filling—just like their armies.
The Wild Coast – Street-food-style slices wrapped in cloth napkins and dipped in garlicky “red fire sauce.” Eat fast. Fight fast.
Free City of Greyhawk – A thick, hearty crust loaded with bold cheese, meat, and sauce—ideal for adventurers coming back from a dungeon delve. Think Chicago-style with magical garnishes (see below).
The Rise of Magickal Pies — The DiGiorno Phenomenon
Recently, culinary arcanists working out of the Talon’s & Turkey stall in Greyhawk created a new kind of pizza, they call it:
DiGiorno (Gnomish for By Day) Pizza™
(“It’s not delivery… it’s DiGiorno—Teleported Hot from the Ethereal Oven”)
DiGiorno pizzas are enchanted during baking with minor evocation and transmutation magic. Each is sealed in a shimmering parchment box that holds:
🔥 Self-Warming Spells – When unsealed, the pizza is instantly reheated to optimal temperature. No fire. No fuss. No burnt crusts.
🕒 Time Dilation Storage – Can be kept up to two weeks in a bag of holding or on a dusty pantry shelf without spoiling. Perfect for dungeon-crawling rations.
🌟 Unusual Toppings – The following variants have been sighted:
Basilisk Bacon & Egg: Smoky meat from a petrified basilisk, topped with wyvern egg yolk. Grants +2 to Constitution for 1 hour.
Planar Pepperoni: Made with spices from the City of Brass. Heats up in your hands. Literally.
Feywild Fig & Goat Cheese: Enchanted fig jam and luminous goat cheese. Induces calm or euphoria (WIS Save DC 12).
Feywild Mushroom Medley: Featuring bioluminescent caps from Myconid farmers. Casts Light when eaten in darkness.
Dragonfire Crust Supreme: Crust lined with powdered fire newt pepper. Breath Weapon (1d4 Fire, DC 10, once).
These “DiGiornos” premiered at the Greyhawk Exhibition and were a great success, especially to adventurers seeking to augment their iron rations with warm food they could prepare without a fire.

Final Slice
From rustic flat pies of the Oeridians to magically-enhanced, self-heating DiGiorno masterpieces, pizza is more than a food—it’s a cultural constant in a land of chaos and change. Whether your party is deep in the Cairn Hills or attending a diplomatic banquet in Celene, pizza provides comfort, surprise, and just a little magic.
