The Birth of PBR: The RPG
“I Bet I Could Write an RPG in a Day…” – Drunk DM Ed
It all started with a bold claim over drinks on May the 4th.
Surrounded by friends, laughter, and a healthy amount of questionable Star Wars puns, I was deep into a conversation with the beautiful MonstersNMommas. We were gaming and weird things I can think up when I said it:
“I bet I could write a full RPG in a day.”
Not a supplement. Not a reskin. A full, standalone RPG. Simple. Fun. Fast. And with just enough chaos to fit the Drunkards and Dragons vibe we've all grown to love.
Well, here we are. I kept my word.
Introducing: PBR: The RPG
What better way to toast a challenge like this than to base it on my go-to beer?
PBR: The RPG is a diceless, card-based, beer-fueled adventure game designed for 1–3 players and a Drink Master (our version of a DM). Instead of dice, you use a mini playing card deck. Instead of complex rules, you lean on the power of storytelling, quick thinking, and a little buzz-induced bravado.
What Makes It Work?
No Dice, No Problem: Player actions are resolved by drawing from a 1–10 mini-deck. Add your stat. Beat the DM's draw. Done.
Beer Pack = Adventure Length: Pick a 6-pack, 12-pack, 24-pack, or a full 30-rack to determine the number of encounters. Each card represents an event, a trap, a boss, or a wild treasure.
Jokers? Pure Chaos: Expect dance-offs, beer gods, time loops, and bar fights at the drop of a card.
Built in a Day, Fueled by Years
Sure, the bones of this thing came together in a single, chaotic night. But in truth, PBR: The RPG has been brewing (pun intended) for years
It’s a celebration of community, storytelling, and the idea that you don’t need a 400-page manual to have an epic adventure.
Want to Try It?
I’ve packaged the whole system into three core sections:
Player’s Handbook – Make your drunk hero in 5 minutes.
Drinkmaster’s Guide – Run chaotic sessions with themed decks and loose rules.
And…..Coming SOON, another Supplement
But WAIT - There’s More……how about an adventure?
🥂 A Final Toast
To Monsters N Mommas, I love you baby - thank you for the challenge & sorry for all the insanity you have to put with when dealing with me.
To Michael Conant, my original co-conspirator—this idea started as “Drinking: The RPG” over too many beers and too many laughs at GenCon, and it’s finally found its form.
To Pabst Blue Ribbon, you remind me of my Dad with every can - and I will never put you down.
To everyone who’s ever played in one of my games: this one's for you.
And to anyone sitting on a wild idea—do it. Sometimes it takes nothing more than a drink, a dare, and a deadline.
Here’s to many more chaotic, hilarious, unforgettable nights around the table.
