Heraldic Device of Lord To’mas Waverly
A formal interpretation and symbolic explanation
I. THE SHIELD (Escutcheon)
Field: Argent (cream/white)
Represents honor, purity of purpose, and truth — a fitting foundation for the motto By Talon and Truth.
Primary Charge: Tri-Arrow of the Yeomanry (Gules)
The inverted three-pronged red spear shape is the base symbol you provided.
It signifies:
Military distinction
Marksman’s honor
Service to the Yeomanry
Recognition of bravery and discipline
Stylized “W” Centerpiece (Gules)
A newly added element, placed where the three spears converge.
Symbolism:
The Waverly crest-letter, representing lineage and house identity
The stylized form evokes wings, sky, and elevation, reinforcing his title Sky Marshall
Its placement symbolizes To’mas as the unifying point of his many duties and achievements
The red color (gules) represents warrior courage, command, and resolve.
II. SUPPORTERS (Flanking Creatures)
Dexter Side: Griffin (Or)
A golden griffon stands proudly, wings spread.
Symbolism:
Represents To’mas as Griffon Rider of Greyhawk, a rare elite order
Embodies vigilance, fearlessness, and nobility
The griffon is traditionally a guardian creature, connected to sky and royalty
Sinister Side: Dragon (Gules)
A red dragon stands opposite the griffon.
Symbolism:
Represents the title Foe of Dragons
Demonstrates he has faced and defeated monstrous threats
Red dragon imagery conveys danger overcome, not allegiance
III. THE CREST (Above the Helm)
Skyship Prow Under Full Moon
A silver skyship sailing across clouds and lit by a full moon.
Meaning:
The skyship symbolizes his command as Sky Marshall of the Aerial Legions
The full moon honors his deed as Hero of the Day of Luna’s Fullness
Clouds represent his dominion over the upper realms
IV. THE HELM & MANTLING
Helm: High Marshal’s Helm
Forward-facing steel helm with gold trim.
Symbolism:
Forward-facing helms are reserved for high-ranking nobles or military commanders
The gold trim indicates distinguished service
Mantling: Gules and Argent
Red and white flowing cloth, rendered in ornate, leaflike flourishes.
Meaning:
Red = valor
White = truth
Torn edges reflect battle-worn experience, a common medieval motif
V. THE COMPARTMENT (Ground Beneath)
The ground includes:
Spears, axes, and broken dragon scale
Represent victories, battles, and wyrm-slaying
A tankard
Denotes his station as Proprietor of the Ol’ 97 Tavern
Also hints at camaraderie and earthly fellowship
Wildflowers
Symbol of being Savior of Merrydale
Rocks and soil
Signifying the foundation of Greyhawk and protective duties
VI. MOTTO SCROLL
“BY TALON AND TRUTH”
Selected by you and beautifully appropriate.
Meaning:
“Talon” references both the griffon (sky authority) and the dragon (foe conquered)
“Truth” aligns with his role as Ambassador of the Realms and moral compass
Together they express a virtuous warrior-diplomat philosophy
